Elopement guide for Scotland
On this page I have gathered some of the essential information about eloping in Scotland and what you need to do and prepare for!
Your Guide to Eloping in Scotland
Eloping in Scotland is pure magic – moody skies, dramatic landscapes, ancient castles, and endless freedom. Whether you dream of saying your vows on the Isle of Skye, in the Highlands, or on a windswept beach, Scotland is one of the most breathtaking places in the world to begin your forever.
Choose Your Location
-
Isle of Skye – iconic cliffs, fairy glens, rugged beauty.
-
Glencoe & the Highlands – dramatic mountains and glens.
-
Edinburgh – history, cobblestone streets, and romantic city vibes.
-
Hidden gems – remote beaches, lochs, and forests.
Think about what atmosphere feels most like you – wild and remote, or romantic and historic.

Legalities & Ceremony
-
In Scotland, you can legally marry almost anywhere outdoors with a registered celebrant.
-
Humanist, interfaith, and independent celebrants are very common.
-
Many couples choose a symbolic ceremony if they prefer fewer formalities.
Tip: Book your celebrant early – they often get booked out far in advance.

Paperwork & Marriage License
To legally marry in Scotland, you’ll need to submit a Marriage Notice (Form M10) to the local registrar of the area where you’ll be getting married. This must be done at least 29 days before your ceremony (but no more than 3 months in advance).
Don’t worry – it’s a straightforward process, and I can guide you to the right registrar’s office depending on your location.

Timing & Weather
-
Spring (Apr–May): wildflowers and fewer crowds.
-
Summer (Jun–Aug): long daylight hours, lush greenery.
-
Autumn (Sep–Oct): moody colors, softer light.
-
Winter (Nov–Mar): dramatic skies, fewer tourists, cozy vibes.
Scottish weather is unpredictable – embrace the mist, wind, and rain as part of the story.

What to Wear & Bring
-
Outfits that feel like you (yes to gowns, kilts, boots, or capes).
-
Layers and sturdy shoes – the terrain can be rough.
-
Optional: flowers, vows, rings, whisky for a toast, a quaich, ribbons for handfasting
Photography & Experience
This is where I come in – not just to capture images, but to help you find breathtaking locations, feel comfortable in front of the camera, and tell your story with Scotland as the backdrop. My style is about mood, connection, and authenticity.

Beyond the photos
I believe your elopement should feel seamless and true to you – and I’m happy to help with more than just photography. Over the years I’ve built knowledge of the best places to stay, where to eat, and which vendors can bring your day to life – from celebrants and makeup artists to florists and cozy accommodations.
While I’m not a planner, I love to share recommendations and tips to make the journey easier for you. That way, you can focus fully on the experience, knowing the details are taken care of.
